Heritage & Cultural Design

Old buildings and sacred places, kept in use.

Heritage buildings are not museum pieces. Havelis, temples and historic precincts are still lived in, worshipped in and traded in, and the best conservation keeps them working for the people who depend on them. Our heritage practice combines careful survey, traditional repair methods and sensible adaptive use.

We begin with a measured survey and a condition assessment, recording each bay, material and crack before any change is proposed. Repairs are made in lime mortar and matching stone wherever possible, and missing carved elements are copied from surviving pieces so the original craft remains legible.

Cultural landscapes, pilgrim routes and historic streets need the same care. We design shade, seating, drainage and wayfinding that respect the monument and the daily life around it, and we document each step so that future custodians can maintain the work.

Questions

Frequently asked.

We work within the rules set by the relevant heritage authorities and seek approval before any work starts. Our role is to propose repairs and uses that keep the historic fabric intact, and to document each step so future work can follow the same method.

Lime is more breathable and flexible than cement, so it lets moisture escape rather than trapping it inside the wall. Cement patches in older masonry often cause the surrounding stone to crack or flake, so we use lime mortars matched to the original where possible.

Often, yes. Adaptive reuse can bring a haveli, a warehouse or a temple court back into daily life as a studio, workshop, guesthouse or community room. The key is to choose uses that fit the building rather than forcing the building to change shape.
