Spatial Research & Analysis

Evidence first, then design.

Good design depends on good information. Our research practice maps places, measures how they perform and records how people use them, so that decisions about buildings and public space rest on evidence rather than assumption.

We combine satellite and survey data, municipal records, climate data and on-site observation. GIS mapping, sun-path and daylight analysis, footfall counts and walking surveys are used together, and where data is missing we collect it ourselves and are clear about the limits of what it can show.

Research is commissioned on its own or as the opening phase of a design project. The outputs are written for planners, councillors, funders and community groups as well as designers, with maps, short briefs and plain-language summaries alongside the technical reports.

What we offer

The full range of our work.

  • 01

    GIS mapping and spatial analysis

Base maps, land-use layers and spatial datasets that show how a place is built, used and changing over time.

  • 02

    Site and climate research

Sun-path, rainfall, wind and flood analysis that informs orientation, drainage and the design of shade.

  • 03

    Walking and footfall studies

Counts, route surveys and observation that show how people move through and use public space.

  • 04

    Heritage and built-fabric surveys

Condition mapping and age profiles that help prioritise repair and identify the buildings that matter most.

  • 05

    Policy and planning research

Review of regulations, precedents and evidence that supports planning decisions and funding applications.

  • 06

    Monitoring and post-occupancy evaluation

Follow-up studies that test whether finished buildings and public spaces perform as intended.

01

Question and data scoping

The research question is agreed, and the data sources, field methods and limits of the study are set out.

Questions

Frequently asked.

We combine satellite and survey data, municipal records, climate data and on-site observation. Where data is missing we collect it ourselves through counts, walks and interviews, and we say clearly what the data can and cannot show.

Yes. Our outputs are written for planners, councillors, funders and community groups as well as designers. We produce maps and short briefs alongside the technical reports, with clear labels and plain-language summaries.

Often. Early research helps a client decide whether a site suits the proposed use, what risks to plan for and which parts of the brief matter most. It can be commissioned alone or as the first phase of a design project.
