The workspace is a converted industrial shed on the outskirts of Pune, given a new life as a shared studio for designers, architects and craft makers. The owners wanted a building that felt tactile and warm, that could take heavy daily use, and that drew on the city's clay-making tradition without becoming a costume.
The street façade is a curved wall of terracotta blocks laid in a loose pattern. It turns the harsh midday sun into soft, dappled light inside the workspace and gives the building a surface that changes through the day. Behind the screen, a double-height studio runs the full depth of the plot, with a mezzanine of teak desks above.
Interiors use exposed brick, polished concrete and lime plaster, with pendant lights hung from steel rods so the ceiling stays open. Each desk has its own cable tray and daylight from high north windows, and the roof is planted with native grasses to cut heat gain into the top floor.
“A screen that changes through the day is better than a flat wall.”

The ideas that shape the building
- 01
Curved terracotta screen
Blocks laid in a loose pattern soften the midday sun and give the street face a surface that shifts through the day.
- 02
Double-height studio with teak mezzanine
Open ceilings and a timber mezzanine give the floor both volume and quieter corners to work in.
- 03
Planted roof to cut heat gain
Native grasses on the roof reduce heat transfer into the top floor during the summer months.
- 04
High north windows for even light
Clerestory glazing on the north gives steady daylight without direct glare on the screens.
