The house is planned for a plot on the western edge of Jodhpur, where summer days are long and hot and the nights cool quickly. The clients want a house that feels calm and bright inside, with a clear separation between the family's day spaces and a guest wing that can be closed off.
The walls are thick load-bearing masonry, finished in lime plaster in a warm white that reflects heat away from the house. Small, deep windows sit high on the hot sides, and a shaded courtyard at the centre opens the rooms to the night breeze. The roof is flat and walkable, with a parapet that doubles as a bench for summer evenings.
Plaster mixes and wall thickness are being tested on sample panels before the design is finalised, since lime is sensitive to curing in dry, windy weather. Floors use local stone with a simple tiled border, and the roof drains to a single downpipe that feeds a planter beside the entrance.
“Lime holds the warmth of the day and gives it back slowly.”

The ideas that shape the building
- 01
Thick masonry walls
Heavy, plastered walls slow the daytime heat and release it gradually after dark.
- 02
Small, deep windows on hot sides
Recessed openings reduce glare and solar gain while keeping the interiors bright.
- 03
Courtyard for night breezes
The central courtyard catches the cool night air and moves it through the rooms.
- 04
Walkable roof with a parapet bench
The flat roof doubles as an outdoor room for summer evenings.
