The house is on a 540 sq.m plot in a built-up colony on the edge of Jaipur. The family wanted a home that could be run comfortably through the dry summer without a large cooling load, that kept privacy from neighbouring terraces, and that used brick the way the older houses on the lane did.
The west wall carries a full-height jaali screen in terracotta, set two bricks deep. It shades the staircase and the upper bedroom from the afternoon sun and lets the family see out without being overlooked. Openings on the east are kept small and high to limit morning heat gain while still bringing in daylight.
Interiors are kept simple: exposed brick on the lower floor, lime plaster above, and Kota stone floors throughout. Built-in seating and storage are made in teak to keep surfaces clear, and a small rain garden on the north side collects roof water into a shallow bed of local grasses and shrubs.
“The screen keeps the view, and keeps the neighbours out of it.”

The ideas that shape the building
- 01
Two-brick-deep terracotta jaali
A full-height screen on the west shades the stair and upper bedroom and screens the house from neighbouring roofs.
- 02
Small, high east openings
Limited glazing on the morning side keeps heat gain low while still bringing in good daylight.
- 03
Rain garden on the north side
Roof water is collected into a shallow planted bed rather than running into the street drain.
- 04
Built-in teak storage
Fitted seating and cupboards keep the rooms clear and reduce the need for loose furniture.
