The institute is being built on the edge of Bhuj for young people from weaving, embroidery and leatherwork families. The brief asks for training workshops that can run through the heat, a gallery for finished work and a place for artisans to meet buyers, all on a site with strong winds and a dry, bright climate.
The campus is planned as a sequence of courts. Workshops line the north side, each with a deep verandah that works as an outdoor demonstration space. A shaded, stepped water court at the centre collects rain in the short monsoon, and tall lattice screens on the west edge break the wind and filter the afternoon light into the workshops.
Construction uses local stone and lime plaster, with thick walls and small deep windows that keep interiors cool through the day. Workshop floors are finished in polished kota, and display surfaces in the gallery are reclaimed teak and bamboo. The building is designed to be taught from as well as used, with structure and services left visible for students of construction and craft.
“Students should be able to read the building they learn in.”

The ideas that shape the building
- 01
Verandahs as outdoor workshops
Deep verandahs along the workshops double as demonstration spaces and shade the interior walls.
- 02
Lattice wind screens
Tall lattice screens on the windward side break strong winds and soften the afternoon light.
- 03
Stepped water court
A central court collects monsoon rain and gives students a shaded place to gather between classes.
- 04
A building that teaches
Structure and services are left visible so that students of construction and craft can learn from the building itself.
