The temple precinct in Bundi has grown up in layers: shrines added over centuries, shops that spilled into the approach, and a paved court that floods and fails every monsoon. The brief from the trust is to make the precinct easier to walk through, protect the carved stone and give pilgrims and residents shade and somewhere to rest.
The design proposes a single clear route from the lower lane to the main shrine, paved on a permeable base. The approach steps are repaired in the original sandstone, and a series of shallow arcades in the upper court are opened up to create shaded waiting areas. Shop frontages are set back, so the carvings on the outer walls can be seen from the lane.
Water is central to the strategy. Roof and court run-off is collected in a stepped channel that feeds a restored tank in the lower court, cutting the flooding that has damaged the lowest steps. The drainage and shade strategy is being tested through a site model and a season of rainfall records before any stone is moved.
“A precinct should be easy to enter and hard to damage.”

The ideas that shape the building
- 01
One clear route through the precinct
A single paved axis links the lower lane to the main shrine and replaces the tangle of informal paths.
- 02
Permeable paving on a stone base
Paving laid over a gravel base lets rain soak in and protects the steps below from undermining.
- 03
Shaded arcades for waiting
Opened arcades in the upper court give pilgrims shade and a place to rest without blocking the carvings.
- 04
Restored tank as a drainage sink
A stepped channel carries run-off to the lower tank, reducing flood damage to the lowest steps.
